 Petirah of Rabbi Neal Harris Z"L

We regret to inform you of the Petirah of Rabbi Neal Harris Z"L, Noach Kalman ben Avram Nachman, of Hunter, New York, on Aug. 11, 2026.

For decades, Rabbi Harris Z"L was the reason Jewish life in Hunter never went quiet. The historic shul on Main Street, built in 1906 and said to be the first freestanding synagogue in the Catskills, has stayed open and in use largely because he kept it that way. He ran the community's website, fielded the calls, and made sure that anyone who showed up on a Friday afternoon in Hunter found a minyan and a place to eat.

He ran a small bed and breakfast in town, open year-round by reservation, but the arrangement was never really a business. Over the last year, he opened his home and property to host the minyan.

He was a longtime volunteer with West Side Hatzolah.

The levaya took place Wednesday, August 12 at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street.  A replay is available at https://www.legacycelebrated.com/rabbi-neal-harris.
